Achimenes (Mixed Bulbs)

Achimenes (Mixed Bulbs)

Cupid's bower

Family

Gesneriaceae

Origin

Mexico

Description

Achimenes are striking plants known for their vibrant, funnel-shaped flowers and soft, velvety leaves that brighten gardens from summer through fall. The bulbs are small with a closed-scale, pinecone-like form. Their foliage ranges from bright to deep green with a fuzzy texture. These plants produce elegant blooms that cascade beautifully over container edges in an array of colors such as pink, blue, scarlet, white, lavender, and purple.

Achimenes, commonly known as Hot Water Plants, yield abundant cascades of soft, colorful flowers. Blooming occurs from June to September in plains and from July to October in hill regions. For a lively summer showcase, plant these bulbs between February and April in plains or March to May in hilly areas.

Environment

Achimenes are related to African Violets and Gloxinia. They need rich, moist soil and shade.

The bulbs should be planted in a wide and not deep pot. During the period of growth and flowering, Ahimenes needs regular and abundant watering.

Usually in winter, achimenez enters a period of rest & remains dormant.

Landscape Use

Flowers are similar to pansies or petunias and hang elegantly down the side of containers, making it an excellent choice for a hanging basket.
