Gymnocalycium Kiko Cactus Plant

Gymnocalycium Kiko Cactus Plant

Gymnocalycium anisitsii forma mostruosa

Family

Cactaceae

Native

Japan

Description

The Gymnocalycium Kikko is a distinctive and rare cactus highly valued by enthusiasts for its sculptural, geometric rib formation. Its rich green, polygonal tubercles create an intriguing star-shaped pattern, often highlighted by delicate white areoles that enhance its decorative appeal.

Kiko is a slow-growing, compact cactus that reaches up to 10 cm in height and spans 8 to 15 cm in diameter. Its coloration ranges from deep olive green to yellowish-green, often developing a vibrant purplish-brown tint when exposed to full sunlight. The areoles can measure up to 10 mm across, and the plant produces distinctive pink flowers.

Environment

Ideal for partial shade, the Gymnocalycium Kiko also adapts well to full sun and full shade, though full sun exposure may cause an uneven brownish-red hue.

It thrives in a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between watering to prevent overwatering. During summer, water regularly, while in winter keep the plant relatively dry, though it tolerates a range of moisture levels.

Apply diluted cactus fertilizer during the active growth period in spring and summer. Though often grafted, this cactus grows successfully and with ease on its own roots.

Landscape Uses

It is an excellent plant for garden rockery settings and desert type landscape.
