Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora Monstruosa Succulent Plant

Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora Monstruosa Succulent Plant

Mother of Thousands

Family

Crassulaceae (sedum family)

Origin

Magadascar

Description

Kalanchoe thyrsiflora 'Monstruosa', a unique cultivar known as shrek’s ears or elephant ears.

Its leaves are thick, fleshy, and exhibit a curled or twisted form, giving it an intriguing, sculptural appearance. The coloring ranges from light green at the base to a striking reddish or purple hue on the edges, especially when exposed to bright sunlight.

Like most Kalanchoes, this plant grows in a rosette formation. The twisting and irregular growth give it a "monstrous" or abnormal look compared to typical varieties.

Environment

Locate Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora Monstruosa in bright, but indirect light for several hours per day. When growing Kalanchoe outdoors, avoid direct afternoon sun. Too much direct sunlight may cause leaves to become sunburned

This plant does need good drainage and is best potted in a soil mix containing ECA or sand for sharper drainage.

Landscape Use

Thyrsiflora Monstruosa is an excellent mid-ground plant. It shines in arrangements with other, more vivacious succulents.
